A policeman and a mugger suffered bullet wounds in a gunfight at the city’s Eskaton Road on Monday night.
Police and witnesses said, a group of muggers swooped on a businessman near Janakantha Bhaban and snatched Tk 59 lakh he was carrying in a carton at around 8:30pm.
As the trader tried to resist them, the thugs fired gunshots, said Deputy Commissioner (DB-PR) Masudur Rahman. Hearing the gunshots, a police patrol team rushed to the spot in aid of the businessman.
Sensing dangers, the muggers opened fire on the policemen forcing the law
enforcers to retaliate that triggered a brief gunfight, leaving sub-inspector Iftekhar and a mugger injured.
At one stage, the other members of the gang fled the scene leaving behind the carton full of money.
Later, police arrested the injured mugger and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
They also recovered the money from the spot. The businessman and the arrested mugger could not be identified immediately.
