UNB, Chittagong :
A policeman and a locomotive master of a Chittagong University shuttle train were injured in an attack by a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League men, deprived of posts in the newly formed CU committee, in the city on Wednesday.
Campus sources said, the post-deprived BCL men enforced a strike on the campus in the morning, demanding that the committee be reconstituted. They put the transport office of the university under lock and key, halting the plying of university vehicles.
A faction of aggrieved BCL men intercepted a CU shuttle train at Jhautala Station in the city around 8 am. They forced the locomotive masters to get down from the train, halting the train movement towards the university.
On information, police rushed in and opened fire in the air to disperse them.
However, the BCL men hurled brick chips at police, triggering a clash. Constable Jakir Hossain and locomotive master Wahiduzzaman were injured during the clash.
Academic activities of the university were largely disrupted as most of the teachers and students could not reach the campus following the strike. Assistant CU Proctor Helal Uddin said legal action will be taken against the striking students if needed. Earlier on Monday, the ruling Awami League’s student wing announced the full-fledged 201-member committee of its CU unit.
Soon after the announcement of the committee, a group of BCL men, deprived of posts, staged demonstrations by putting the main gate of the university under lock and key. They also blocked Chittagong-Hathazari road on Tuesday and called a strike for Wednesday at the university.
