Cop among 9 killed in road crashes

Nine people, including a police official, were killed in separate road accidents in the capital, and Sirajganj, Chittagong and Chandpur districts on Wednesday.
In the capital, five people, including the police official, were killed and two others injured in three separate road accidents in Sabujbagh, Cantonment and Gulistan areas.
The deceased were identified as sub-inspector Bikash Kumar Ghosh, 40, of Sabujbagh Police Station, Jewel, 25, a pick-up helper, Mostafizur Rahman, a contractor, Md Sohel, 28, and Asiya Khatun, 35, a nurse of community clinic “Surjer Hashi”.
Police said an accident took place near Sabujbagh Buddha Temple when a speeding covered van hit a pickup lying stationary there after its (van’s) tyre got punctured at about 1:15 am, leaving pick-up’s helper Jewel dead on the spot and its driver Abul Hossain and covered van’s driver Russell, 23, injured.
Bikash, who was diverting vehicles to different directions to avoid possible traffic congestion due to the pickup breakdown, sustained injuries as the pickup knocked him down, Inspector (Investigation) of Sabujbagh Police Station Tajul Islam said.  
The police official was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries at about 4am.
Bikash, who joined Bangladesh Police in 1996, hailed from Bhatbaria in Shailakupa upazila of Jhenidah district. Son of late Binoy Kumar Ghose, he had been residing at 366 North Guran with his wife and two kids.
The pick-up helper hailed from Bhaberchar Bharotipara in Mymensingh. Son of Kaila Mia, Jewel was residing at Bhanga Press of Kajla in Jatrabari.
In another accident, contractor Mustafizur Rahman died on the spot when a speeding vehicle hit him in front of Bhuiyan Trading House at Matikata near Banani-Mirpur Flyover under Cantonment Police Station at about 1am.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to the DMCH morgue for autopsy.
In the last accident, Sohel and Asya received fatal injuries near toll plaza of Gulistan on Gulistan-Jatrabari Flyover when a speedy vehicle hit them at about 9am.
They were rushed to the DMCH where Sohel, a bus helper, was declared dead at about 9:30am while Asiya succumbed to her injuries at about 10:30am.
Asiya, wife of Asadullah, was residing at Netaiganj in Narayanganj. She came got down from a bus on her way her Wari Office when the accident happened.
Sohel, son of Amu Hamza Bepari, hailed from Chandpur Sadar. He was a resident of 1435 Dakkhin Dhania in Jatrabari.
In Sirajganj, a woman and her eight-year-old daughter were killed as a bus crashed into a van carrying them near Nalka Bridge under Hatikumrul Police Station at noon.
One of the deceased was identified as Prinjira Thakur. They hailed from Nurnagar village in Kamarkhanda upazila of the district.
Highway police said the Bogra-bound bus of ‘Marjanur Paribahan’ from Dhaka hit the van from behind on Dhaka-Sirajganj Highway on the western side of Bangabandhu Multipurpose Bridge around 12:30pm, leaving the minor girl dead on the spot and her mother injured.
The woman died on the way to hospital.
In Chittagong, a speeding bus hit a middle aged man, one Chowdhury Palak, 50, son of Adhir Chowdhury, under Double Mooring Police Station of the city while he was crossing the road in the morning, leaving him injured critically.
The injured was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where doctors declared him dead, CMCH camp police sources said.
In Chandpur, a motorcyclist was killed and his co-rider injured when their bike overturned on Matlab-Pennai road at Raldia Kali Bhangti in Matlab upazila.
The deceased was identified Billal Hossain, 25, son of Motaleb Hossain Mantu, a resident of the town.
