Ensuring open and timely access to information will help to stop corruption, improve governance and increase accountability and transparency.
Coordinated efforts should be taken at individual and institution levels for proper implementation of the Right to Information (RTI) law.
These observations came at a training workshop for the designated officers related to the RTI law held recently at the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner (DC), Rajshahi.
Ensuring responsiveness of the public offices for providing information in an efficient and equitable manner was the main objective of the workshop.
Information Commissioner Suraiya Begum addressed the workshop as chief guest while Commissioner of Rajshahi Division GSM Zafarullah spoke as special guest with DC Abdul Jalil in the chair, reports BSS.
Deputy Director of Local Government Division Shahana Akhter Jahan, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Kallyan Chowdhury and Additional Superintendent of Police (Adi.SP) Abu Saleh Ashraful Alam also spoke.
Terming the access to information as a vital tool of development- Suraiya Begum observed that the role of RTI act to achieve the SDGs is very much effective as its basic objective for a better and sustainable future for all, adding its key commitment is “no one will be left behind”.
Successful implementation of the RTI act can be the best way of supplementing the government efforts of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
Full-length implementation of the RTI act with unhindered flow of information by all government and non-government organisations concerned needs to be ensured for expediting development and ensuring good governance everywhere in the society.
“Implementation of RTI act has become crucial for the sake of establishing good governance in the society and enhancing transparency and accountability in all tiers of public services,” she added.
To this end, designated officers of all the public and private offices should be proactive in terms of delivering information.
