Anti-terrorism unit of police arrested a member of banned militant group Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) on Monday; nearly three years after a Rangpur court sentenced him to death for killing the caretaker of a mazar in 2015.
Abdur Rahman alias Chandu Mia, is a member of the militant group.
He had been hiding in different areas over the years, posing as rickshaw puller and day labourer, Aslam Khan, ATU’s superintendent of police, told reporters.
A team of ATU arrested him from Savar area around 7:30pm yesterday, he said during a briefing at ATU headquarters in Baridhara.
During primary interrogation, the convict admitted his involvement in the killing, the SP said.
Caretaker of a mazar, Rahmat Ali, 55, of Bade Moskur village, was hacked to death in Choita intersection area of Kaunia upazila in Rangpur on November 10, 2015.
On March 18 in 2018, a Rangpur court sentenced seven members of JMB including Chandu to death for killing him. The other convicts are-Masud Rana, Bijoy, Liton Mia, Ihsak Ali, Shakhwat Hossain and Sarwar Hossain.
