Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Tuesday described his party as a “deep-rooted banyan tree” and it cannot be ousted easily.
“The root of Awami League is in very deep of this soil as like as banyan tree. It is not possible to oust the party,” he told a memorial meeting at the Nagar Bhaban here.
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) organized the discussion marking the 11th death anniversary of Mayor Mohammad Hanif with its Mayor Sayeed Khokon in the chair.
AL Organising Secretaries Ahmed Hossain, BM Mozammel Haque, Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapan and Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Office Secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, Jubo League Chairman Omar Faruk Chowdhury, Dhaka City South unit of AL President Abul Hasnat and General Secretary Shahe Alam Murad, among others, spoke.
Quader, also Minister for Road Transport and Bridges, said Mayor Hanif had contributed to every democratic movement including 1966 six-point movement and 1969 Mass Upsurge.
In 1996, Hanif had played an important role by setting up Janatar Mancha (people’s stage) to oust BNP government which was formed following an election boycotted by all major political parties and with very low turn-out.
He criticized the BNP’s call for waging mass movement saying that the word mass-upsurge is now in museum.
“Because of the achievements and development activities of the incumbent government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the word muss-upsurge has taken place in museum,” he observed.
The thinking of waging mass movement, he said, is now tantamount to nightmare and it will work.
“The country is so pleased with the development activities of the government that they did not respond to any call of mass movement,” he added.
The AL General Secretary urged the party leaders and workers to go door to door of the people to realize their pulse.
Quader said the UNESCO recognition to the historic 7th March Speech of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has revived the nation. “We will have to keep up the wave of the revival till the next election,” he added.
