Speakers at a memorial meeting on Thursday said the contributions of late Dr MA Wazed Miah, husband of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to nuclear science and the country will be ever remembered.
Paying rich tributes to the memory of Dr Wazed, they said he had spent his entire life as a very simple person.
Dr MA Wazed Miah Memorial Foundation organised the meeting at Jatiya Press Club in the capital marking the 10th death anniversary of the late nuclear scientist.
Late Dr Wazed Miah was a person free from covetousness and he was praised by all quarters, said nuclear scientist AFM Mizanur Rahman, also a nephew of Dr Wazed.
Recalling his contribution to nuclear science, Mizanur said Dr Wazed wrote eight books on science, which were included in the curriculum in India.
Abu Bakar Siddique, an adviser of Dr MA Wazed Miah Memorial Foundation, said representatives from 18 political parties joined the namaz-e-janaza of Dr Wazed at the South Gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, which proved that he was the second most accepted personality in the country after Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Former student leader ABM Shafiqul Alam Bulu said Dr Wazed was not only a scientist but also a courageous student leader.
He said Dr Wazed was Vice-President (VP) of Fazlul Haq Hall of Dhaka University and he was sent to jail for doing student politics. The speakers said although Dr Wazed was very close to the state power, he never hankered after power and never enjoyed any state facility for the greater interest of the country’s people.
Adviser of Dr MA Wazed Miah Memorial Foundation Md Monwar Hossain, its General Secretary Md Moshiur Rahman and Poet Md Emdadul Haque, among others, spoke at the meeting with foundation President AKM Farhadul Kabir in the chair.
