UNB, Dhaka :
The government is set to award contracts soon among local bidders to build some 520 flats in the city for the middle-income group people.
According to official sources, the National Housing Authority (NHA) under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works has initiated the move to construct the flats at Mirpur’s Section-9.
These flats will be built as part of the original plan of the Housing and Public Works Ministry to build a total of 1,000 flats in 10 separate 14-storey buildings, with each having 104 flats.
The government has actually approved a project involving Tk 669.71 crore to build a total of 1,000 flats. In the first phase, the proposed 520 flats will be constructed in five separate high-rises- each of 1500 square feet in size.
Official documents reveal that the NHA has already selected a number of contractors through a tender process for the construction of the apartment buildings.
Local construction firm Md. Noor Hossain JV has been selected for building No-1 at a contract value of Tk 53.74 crore while TEAL-TBL Consortium for building No-2 at Tk 53.77 crore.
Local contractor PBL-PEL JV has been selected for building No-3 at Tk 54.99 crore and building No-4 at Tk 55.09 crore.
Another firm, Desh Unnayan Ltd-the Builders’ Engineers JV, has got the work for building No-5 at a cost of Tk 55.05 crore, official sources said.
However, the estimated cost for each of the building was said to be Tk 55.16.
As per terms and conditions of the tender, each of the firm has to complete the project within 30 months after the award of the contract. They will also have to do land development works, construction of water reservoirs, water pipelines, septic tanks and inspection pits for the project.
The NHA has already put forward the tender proposals to the Housing and Public Works Ministry for the final approval of the Cabinet Purchase Committee.
Once the Cabinet purchase body approves the proposals, the NHA will go for awarding the contracts to the selected firms.
The officials said the project has been a part of the government’s mega project to build several thousands low-cost apartments in phases for low- and middle-income groups instead of allocating lands.
A number of similar projects are being implemented in Uttara and Purbachal areas by the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkhya (Rajuk) and the NHA, said a Housing and Public Works Ministry official.
