A sub-committee of Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat on Sunday recommended that authorities concerned should carry on the consciousness programmes among the common people about the ways to improve maternal health and ensure safe delivery.
The sub-committee made the observation at a meeting over the implementation of a project titled ‘Strengthening Parliament’s Capacity in Population and Development Issues (SPCPD)’ held on Sunday at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban here.
The Jatiya Sangsad is implementing the project funded by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) with view to improving maternal health, reducing mortality rate of mother as well as child and ensuring safe deliver across the country.
Chaired by convener of the committee and Chief Whip ASM Firoz, the meeting participated by whips M Shahiduzzaman Sarker and M Shahab Uddin.
Lawmakers, Habibey Millat, Dr M Enamur Rahman, Begum Fazilatun Nesa, and Advocate Umme Kulsum Smriti were also present at the meeting.
Stressing the need for arranging workshops with participation of MPs in remote areas, the meeting said all members of the parliament (MPs) should join the ongoing campaign related to mother and neonatal health.
The meeting also suggested including maternal and neonatal health issues in the monthly coordination meeting of the deputy commissioner as well as upazila nirbahi officer.
It recommended quick implementation of all the decisions taken earlier over neonatal health and mothers’ care after conducting a joint meeting between Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare Ministry and the sub-committee.
Senior Secretary of the parliament secretariat Dr M Abdur Rob Hawlader and relevant officials were also present at the meeting, the statement added.
