Proper enforcement of the Consumers’ Rights Protection Act is very important for freeing the public health from food poisoning and other contamination.
The issue of the consumers’ rights is well accepted throughout the world and in the free market economy. So, there is an urgent need of creating public awareness about aspects of consumers’ rights.
The observation came at a meeting of upazila level consumers and civil society bodies.
Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) and Issue-based Project on Food Safety Governance in Poultry Sector jointly organised the meeting in the conference hall of Nawhata Pourasava under Paba upazila in Rajshahi on Tuesday.
Pourasava Mayor Mokbul Hossain and committee advisers Professor Ashraf Ali Dewan, Zahidur Rahman, SM Kamruzzaman and Wazed Ali, journalists Kazi Nazmul Islam and Sohel Mahbub, CAB project field coordinator Amor D Costa and field officer Mohidul Hassan addressed the meeting.
Mokbul Hossain said consumer protection, in the broader sense, refers to the laws and regulations that ensure fair interaction between service providers and consumers.
He mentioned that the consumers’ rights in the developed nations focus on the right to information, choice, redress and representation, but we are deprived of such privileges.
Unsafe food has been adjudged as a major threat to public health in Bangladesh, so emphasis should be given to adopting effective measures in this regard, he added.
