The construction of the China Economic and Industrial Zone in Anwara and the construction of a tunnel under the Karnafuli River were agreed upon on the same day.
Although the construction work of the tunnel is in the final stage, the work of the industrial zone is still in the beginning stage. The government has not reached a final agreement with the developer China Harbang Engineering Company due to complications.
On the other hand, the Chinese government has asked for permission to change the developer organisation, but it has not yet agreed. In this situation, although one of the two projects started on the same day started showing light, the other remained in the dark. During her visit to Beijing in 2014, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina proposed an ‘industrial zone’ to the Chinese authorities. Later, the executive committee of the National Economic Council of China gave its approval. On October 14, 2016, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Chinese President Xi Jinping inaugurated the virtual China Economic and Industrial Zone while signing the formal agreement for the construction of Bangabandhu Tunnel.
