Ctg-Cox's Bazar-Ghundom rail route: Construction work to begin in Sept

The construction work of the long awaited duel gauge rail route from Chittagong to Cox’s Bazar’s Ghundom will begin in September-October of this year with $1.5 billion financial assistance of the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB).
ADB will provide $1.5 billion in four installments for the construction of the dual-gauge railway line that will bring marked improvement in trade and tourism to the southernmost parts of Bangladesh, said Project Director Mofijur Rahman.
Earlier, ADB signed $300 million in loans for Bangladesh on June 21 to build a dual-gauge railway connecting Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar on month as first installment. After the completion of the work of first installment, they will provide $400 million as second installment, $500 million as third installment and $300 million as fourth installment.
The 101-km dual gauge track, which is expected to be completed by 2022, will facilitate quick travel to the world’s longest sea beach not only from the capital, but also from neighboring Bhutan, India and Nepal through the existing Dhaka-Kolkata rail route.
The Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar Rail-Line Project has already been marked as a fast-track project by the government and they allocated 2200 crore for land acquisition. Project director Mofijur Rahman said, the construction works will start by September-October. We will be able to ask for work order to the constructor and the construction work will start ending the rainy season as we go the project fund.
He said, the project will be implemented at a cost of Tk18,034cr. The 100km dual gauge track project will implement in two phases which expect to complete within three years. In first phase we will construct rail line from Dohazari to Cox’s Bazar and in second phase the rail link will construct from Cox’s Bazar to Ghundom.
The line will begin at Dohazari village of Chittagong and extend southwards to Xilongxa of Cox’s Bazar through seven upazilas: Chandanaish, Satkania and Lohagara of Chittagong; and Chakaria, Cox’s Bazar Sadar, Ramu and Ukhia of Cox’s Bazar.
