Coal based Bangladesh-India friendship Rampal Thermo Power Plant in Bagerhat district is going into production in December of the current calendar year. It may be mentioned here that due to the corona pandemic, the progress of the power plant was greatly hampered for the last one year. But at present more than 7 thousand workers and technicians are working round the clock in order to expedite the project. By this time 62 per cent work of the plant was already completed. The rest 38 percent work of the power plant will be completed by December this year.
The first unit of the 1320 MW coal-fired Thermo Power Plant will go into operation in December this year while the 2nd unit with the same capacity will go into operation in the beginning of the year 2022, was confirmed by a reliable source of the power plant.
Md. Rezaul Karim Deputy Project Director of Rampal Bngladesh-India Friendship Thermo Power Plant disclosed, in order to meet the country’s growing demand of electricity, an MoU was inked in the presence of two premiers of India and Bangladesh while Sheikh Hasina was visiting in India on January 11 in the year 2010.
To implement the joint venture project an agreement between Power Development Board (PDB) and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) was signed in January 2012 to build a 2640 MW coal-fired Thermal Power Plant at Rampal in Bagerhat. The foundation stone was laid at a cost of Tk 16,000 crore on October 8, 2013.
Construction of the power plant began on 1834 acres of land on April 4, 2017 at embankment of Pashur river at Rampal.
Construction of the power plant came to a standstill in March last year as more than 1,500 Indian workers returned to the country due to prevailing of Pandemic.
With the return of these Indian workers and joining of a team of new engineers, the work of the power plant gained momentum.
