Construction work of Karnaphuli Tunnel begins in April

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader MP on Wednesday said that the construction work of much-awaited tunnel under the Karnaphuli River would be inaugurated in April next.
“The construction work of the 3.5 kilometre-long tunnel at a cost of Tk 8,500 crore will be completed within four years and a new township will be developed on the other side of the Karnaphuli River on completion of the tunnel construction work,” he said.
The Minister said this while inaugurating 2.5 kilometre-long Arban Ali road built here at a cost of Tk 9.38 crore under Karnaphuli thana area in the morning.
 The Minister said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Chinese President will jointly lay foundation stone of the construction work in April.
He said all necessary preparations including the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), a commercial deal with Chinese firm, and ECNEC approval from the government have been completed to start the construction work.
Representatives from Exim Bank of China, the loan financer, visited the tunnel construction site at 11:00am on Wednesday with expectations rife that an agreement will be signed within next one month in this regard between Chinese Exim Bank and External Relation Division (ERD), the Minister said.
“Besides, five kilometre six-lane road on north side of Shah Amanat Bridge and three kilometre on its south side would be turned into four-lane road at a cost of Tk 304 crore,” he infored.
Quader also said that the government would construct another marine drive road from Mirsarai of Chittagong to Cox’s Bazar for easy transportation.
The construction work of much-awaited Dhaka-Chittagong highway would be completed within May next and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the four-lane highway, he added.
