Lawmaker of Chapainawabganj Sadar constituency Md Abdul Wadud inaugurated the project of 6.22 kilometres bank protection and 2.7 kilometres dredging on Saturday.
The project titled ‘Alatuli Elaka Rakkha Prokolpa’ has been taken up with a view to protecting the char areas of Alatuli, Shahjahanpur and Debinagar unions of Chapainawabganj sadar upazila from the erosion of the river Padma at a cost of Tk. 165,51,00,000, sources in the Water Development Board (WDB) said.
Chief Engineer of Water Development Board (WDB) Abdur Rab Mia said, the project would be implemented under three phases monitoring system to control the quality of the construction work. Tk 25,10,00,000 has so far been allocated for the project and 900 metres riverbank would be protected with this money, he added. He further added that WDB will implement the project. Five contractors’ farms have already started the construction work and the construction would be finished by the year 2015.
During the inauguration, superintendent engineer of WDB Mohammad Shahabuddin, sub-divisional engineer Abdul Hamid, sadar upazila vice chairmnn Ziaur Rahman Tota and Shantana Hoque and AL leaders, among others were present.
The lawmaker said, after the completion of the construction work, there will be no erosion and thousands of char people, their cultivable lands and residences would be protected.
The construction of a drain at Alinagar in the town was also inaugurated on Sunday.
