Syed Shemul Parvez :
There is no sign of the beginning of the Padma embankment barrage in Shariatpur district’s Naria and Zanjira upazilas which has frustrated the people as river erosion will continue.
It was supposed to begin the work of embankment on the Padma river either October or November after fall of the water level in the river, but that had not happened.
When contacted, Enamul Haque Shamim, organising secretary of Bangladesh Awami League, who worked earnestly for last two years for the embankment said, “We are very serious about it.
We have already informed it to our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who gave assurance, even ordered the administration instantly to build Embankment in question on the Padma.
On 22 November, we met the Chief of Staff Bangladesh Navy Admiral Mohammad Nizamuddin Ahamed who served us strong assurance that 30 November would be a memorable day of beginning the work.
Prime Minister sanctioned about Taka two thousand crore to build the embankment on the once furious Padma river. She will grant more if it demands, the Navy chief added.
But, as it is a big project, it will take time to make a practical decision so that nothing hampers this project. However, we are very conscious to finish this work very soon.
Advocate Abul Kalam who is the pioneer of Movement demanding Embankment on the Padma said, we discussed several times with Water Development Board on the issue of Padma Embankment to start the work as soon as possible. Even last 20 November we talked with the officers of Bangladesh Navy, Chief Engineer and some local potential personnel who were connected to the Padma embankment movement.
One of such leaders, Toriqul Islam Rubel said, actually we are still in doubt about the Padma embankment. It was said when the water of Padma will start receding, the embankment work will be started, but there is no progress at all.
It is noted that erosion by the river Padma has taken a serious turn in Naria and Zanjira upazilas of Shariatpur district. Millions of people from both the upazilas are spending sleepless nights on the bank of the river.
According to sources, around 10,000 families of both Naria and Zanjira upazilas were rendered homeless in the last two years. The fuming river has already devoured several thousand acres of land, houses, roads and educational institutions.
Around 1500 business establishments and 300 multi-storey buildings of Molfatganj, Sadhurbarbazar, Charnaria and Muktakarchar of Naria upazila and Konderchar, Khejurtola, Pachokaharkandi, Borokandi and Madborkandi of Zanjira upazila have been removed from the two upazilas.
Now Naria Bazar and Bilaspur union is under a tremendous threat.
