The demand and dream of the Chittagong people for establishing a new Medical University in the port city Chittagong is going to be realized. Sources said, Prof Dr Mohammad Ismail Khan was appointed as the first Vice-chancellor (VC) of Chittagong Medical University on April 11 last.
He took charge on May 14. He started office at the site of the university at Foujdar-hat under Sitakunda in Chittagong from the day.
The new VC Prof Dr Mohammed Ismail Khan visited the site of the university on Monday along with Bangladesh Institute of Tropical and Infectious Disease (BITID) Prof Dr M A Hasan, Executive Engineers of Housing and Settlement Department Engineer Mohammad Shahajan and Engineer Abdul Jalil, Deputy Assistant Engineer Khorshed Alam and Sayedul Karim.
Dr Ismail Khan said the government has decided to acquire 16.36 acres of land for the new Medical University in the port city. The Chittagong Medical University will be set up on a total of 41.06 acres of land. Of these, there are 24.70 acres of land while rest 16.36 acres of land should be acquired for the new Medical University.
Talking to the journalists, he said, “The Health Ministry and other ministries concerned have already taken decision to acquire 16.36 acres of land for the new Medical University.”
He claimed that the area of Foujdarhat under Sitakunda in Chittagong is the best site for Chittagong Medical University. “We will start the work of construction in June next.”
Executive Engineers of Housing and Settlement Department Engineer Mohammad Shahajan said the work to set the university is progressing now. “I hope that the VC of the university can do his office here at the site from June next.” VC of Chittagong Medical University Prof Dr Mohammed Ismail Khan is temporarily continuing his office at the building of BITID.
It may be mentioned that earlier on October 8 in last year, Minister for Housing Engineer Mosharraf Hossain MP said that the ministry will provide land for Chittagong Medical University at Foujdarhat under Sitakunda in Chittagong.
The Medical University will be set up on 40 acres of land. After talking to the engineers and officials concerned, Mosharaf Hossain MP decided to give land for new medical university in the country at Foujdarhat under Sitakunda in Chittagong.
At that time, Engineer Mosharaf Hossain said there are huge lands vacant without any establishment. “So, we decided to construct the medical university at Foujdarhat under Sitakunda in Chittagong.”
According to the sources, the people of Chittagong were demanding to change the CMC to Chittagong Medical University and Chittagong General Hospital to Bonga Mata Sheikh Fazilutu-nnesa Medical College.
