The construction work of a compost fertiliser production plant began at Birbhadra Mahiganj area here in the city today.
Mayor of Rangpur Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu inaugurated the construction work by casting reinforced cement concrete at basement of the plant at ceremony arranged there as the chief guest, said a press release.
The Department of Environment (DoE) has been implementing construction work of the compost plant at Taka 2.20 crore under its Programmatic Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Project with financial assistance of Bangladesh Climate Change Trust.
The main objective of establishing the plant is to turn household solid wastes and garbage into compost fertilisers through organic recycling using modern technologies to use the products in agricultural activities and improve environment of the city.
With Director of the CDM Project Dr Anwar Hossain in the chair, Chief Executive Officer of Rangpur City Corporation Akhter Hossain Azad, its Superintending Engineer Emdad Hossain and Executive Engineer Azam Ali, City Councilors Jahangir Alam Tota and Akram Hossain and local elite attended the occasion.
Mayor Jhantu on the occasion laid importance on recycling of all municipal organic wastes adopting modern technologies to produce usable eco-friendly compost fertilisers for improving environment.
He also mentioned that adequate steps had already been taken under various programmes to turn Rangpur into an eco-friendly clean city with better environment in future.
