The ethnic people of Dinajpur celebrated the 161st Santal Revolutionary Day on Thursday holding different programmes including discussion, procession and human chain.
They also memorised the deceased Shidu-Kanu and placed floral on symbolic altar.
In Phulbari upazila of Dinajpur, the ethnic people of the upazila gathered at Polashbari Government Primary school on Thursday morning to celebrate the day. Playing floral wreath at the altar of Shidhu-Kabu, they brought out a procession which paraded different roads of the upazila.
Palli Sree a Dinajpur based non government organisation arranged the programme.
At the discussion meeting the speakers reapedly demanded the government to meet the demands of ethnic people of this region. The speakers at the discussion meeting said that without forming separate land commission for indigenous people it would be tough for government to protect their land.
Krishna Robdas chaired the discussion meeting.
The speakers were Manik Ratan, journalist Amar Chand Gupta Apu, Nitai Chandra Roy, Jewel Rana and Rubel Hasan.
In Parbatipur upazila of Dinajpur, the ethnic people of the upazila formed a human chain in front of local Shahid Minar on Thursday holding festoons and banner.
The hour long human chain demanded constitutional recognition of the ethnic people. Parbatipur upazila unit of Jatiya Adivasi Parishad (Jap) organised the programme.
Similar programme was also held in Nawaganj and Ghoraghat upazila of Dinajpur.
They organised also arranged sports of their culture and later distributed winning prizes among the winners.
