BSS, Dhaka :
Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) has developed conservation and cultivation techniques of 14 fresh water fish species in a situation where at least 54 out of 265 species are endangered.
This was disclosed on the concluding day of the “Annual Research Planning Workshop-2014-15” of BFRI Thursday the LGRD auditorium in the capital. Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Muhammed Sayedul Haq inaugurated the two-day workshop.
The workshop evaluated 57 research projects of last year and 55 research proposals for the current year.
According to Vision-2021, 4.2 million metric tons of fish will be produced by 2021, which at present is 3.5 million metric tons. To achieve the target researchers, scientists as well as fisheries officers will have to work hard, said the minister.
The minister also said that excessive catching of fish from the fishing grounds and random use of pesticides have endangered the natural fishing grounds. “Extensive scientific research will be able to increase the fish production as well as the quality”, the minister hoped.
Presenting the research activities, the Director of BFRI Dr. Yahia Mahmud stated that the scientists are hopeful to invent vaccine against virus contamination among the catfishes by next two years. The institute has also started research on sea weed culture technique along with sea water fishes as the new maritime boundary has widen the opportunity, he added.
