Beaten to death in Burimari: Confessional statement of another accused given to court

Another accused, Russell Islam Raj alias Bishu, 22, who was arrested in connection with the burning of Shahidunnabi Jewel’s body after he was beaten to death in Burimari in Lalmonirhat, has given a confessional statement. Five people pleaded guilty in the court.
Russell testified in the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Israfil Alam, a judge of Amli Court-3, on Friday night after a five-day remand. Earlier on Sunday at noon, the judge of Amli Court-3, Senior Judicial Magistrate Ferdousi Begum, granted a five-day remand application. Russell is the son of Hamidul Islam of Jummapara area of Burimari union in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat.
District Police Detective Branch (DB) Officer-in-Charge (OC) Omar Farooq said Russell, an unnamed accused in three cases filed in the much-discussed Jewel murder case, was arrested on Thursday night from Patgram College Junction.
Russell was arrested after finding evidence of involvement in the investigation of three cases. The court granted Russell a five-day remand for extensive questioning in response to a police request. When Russell was produced in court at around 8pm on Friday after his remand, he made a confessional statement in court. A total of five people, including Burimari Union Sramik League president Abul Hossain alias Hossain, decorator and mosque attendant Jobed Ali, have given confessional statements in the case.
Meanwhile, Faridul Islam, 35, son of Ainul Haque of Islampur Dangapara village in Burimari Union, was arrested on Thursday (November 28) in the case and sent to jail on Friday evening. Police arrested a total of 40 people in the case. OC Omar Farooq also said that 15 of them have been interrogated on remand for different periods.
Earlier, an attack took place at Burimari Bazar Central Jame Mosque in Patgram Upazila on the night of October 29. Killed youth Abu Yunus said. Shahidunnabi Jewel is the son of Abdul Wazed Miah of Shalban Mistripara in Rangpur city. He is a former librarian of Rangpur Cantonment Public School and College and a former student of Dhaka University (DU). He lost some of his mental balance after being fired last year.
