Four bloggers have been attacked in Dhaka within three hours on Saturday. One was killed and three were seriously injured. We are not going to accept that police should be blamed. The situation is becoming explosive. A few arrogant freedom fighters who have been making provocative statements against BNP and Jamaat are making the situation worse. They themselves are enjoying police protection while attacking others as non-freedom fighters. They think it is a fight between freedom fighters and non-freedom fighters. In our view, they are not realistic and being irresponsible in dividing the country.
The ruling party Awami League is in full control of the national politics and yet it is not above fears of its own security in power. The opposition parties like BNP and Jamaat are almost invisible from the scene while most ruling party leaders boast themselves now saying the opposition is disappearing, it has no place in the country’s politics.
This is one face of the ruling party’s politics. On the other hand, the government leaders see BNP-Jamaatmen as so powerful that they have their hands on everything that goes wrong in the government, which is not really clear to many. Meanwhile almost all legal and administrative actions are at work to totally eliminate opposition from local and national politics to make sure that none but Awami League will only rule the country.
In the eyes of Awami League, BNP-Jamaat are communal and anti-liberation forces and people have rejected them. But what appears from the statements and activities of the government leaders is that they can’t remain content with all their oppressive actions against BNP leaders. All the ministers are found busy worrying about BNP while at the same time claiming that BNP is finished and divided.
The question is that if the major opposition has lost political ground and people’s support; why the ruling party is so nervous about the opposition. Why the leaders are wasting so much time and energy to undermine the leaders and workers of the opposition if they are no more an effective political force?
Recently, the government has accused top BNP leaders now staying in London for arranging the murder of two foreigners. Not only that, for every murder BNP is blamed even before police investigation is completed.
The ministers have also been making statement to say that Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury, a senior BNP Vice President, has weakened the party and claimed many others will follow him. Some even said BNP is becoming a non-existent party. The BNP says that Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury resigned under pressure from the government. But he himself said he resigned on health ground. But whatever be the reason, it is too much that BNP has been seriously damaged by his resignation – weak for powerful.
Instead of wasting time to destroy the opposition, the government should show its ability to run the government. That will help the government.
In some estimates over 19,000 cases are hanging over tens of thousands of BNP leaders and workers. Lacs of them are accused.
The government repeatedly says BNP is finished as a political party but remains nervous about it. How to destroy BNP cannot be the all-time occupation of the government.
The government has left to the police the responsibility of maintaining law and order, but it is failing to see that law and order is a matter of political management.
