Kishoreganj District Judge Court and Legal Aid Committee arranged a colourful rally, discussion, seminar, drama and hand bill distribution marking the National Legal Aid Day yesterday.
A discussion meeting on sustainable development country: Legal Aid in Bangladesh was held at District Judge Court conference room on Saturday morning.
Senior District and Session Judge Md Mahabub-ul-Islam, veteran freedom fighter presided over the discussion.
Special Judge (Women & Children) Kiran Chandra Hawlader, Police Super Masrukur Rahman Khaled BPM and ADM Alamgir Hossain were attended as special guest.
It was addressed among others by District Legal Aid Officer Sohel Morng, Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr Mujibur Rahman, Bar President Adv M.A Rashid, Formar Bar President Mia Mohammad Ferdous, Hindu Kallan Trusti Senior Adv Dolon Bhowmik, GP Adv Bijoy Shankor Roy, PP Adv Shah Azizul Hoque, Special PP and District Awami League Adv M.A Afzol, Bar Secretary Shahidul Alam, Mohila Parished President Advocate Maya Bhowmik, Assistant Judge Mohacina Hosen Tusi, Assistant Judge Joyita Islam, Mithamoin Upazila Chairman Advocate Shahid Uddin Bhuiyan.
Legal Aid Office said that the provided legal advice to 2530 people and provided legal assistant in lodging cases.
Later, a colourful rally was brought out in the town led by Senior District Judge Md. Mahabub-ul-Islam, Police Super Masrukur Rahman Khaled and ADM Alamgir Hossain.
BSS from Rajshahi adds: Judicial and other officials at a post-rally discussion here yesterday unequivocally called for a concerted efforts of all government and non-government entities concerned to reach fruits of government legal aid to all litigants , especially to the poor and underprivileged ones.
They mentioned that all people are equal to the eye of law. So, all people should have access to legal aid coverage whenever they need. Legal aid related cases should be prioritized to ensure speedy disposal for the greater interest of the distressed and poor peoples.
District Legal Aid Committee organized the discussion at the District Judge’s Court premises to mark the National Legal Aid Day yesterday like other parts in the country.
“Country is moving forward through development and rule of law, the whole Bangladesh is enjoying fruits of legal aid” was the main theme of this year’s day.
Chaired by Senior District and Session Judge and Chairman of District Legal Aid Committee Mahbub-Ul-Alam, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Metropolitan Session Judge Iliash Hossain, Special Tribunal Judge of Prevention of Women and Children Repression Monsur Alam, Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Tanveer Haider Chowdhury, Superintendent of Police Md Shahidullah and President of Advocate Bar Association Lokeman Ali.
The speakers emphasised the need for concerted efforts of all quarters to ensure access to justice of the distressed and disadvantaged people. They viewed that infusing dynamism in the legal aid services could be the effective means of attaining the cherished goal.
District Legal Aid Committee Chairman Mahbub-Ul-Alam said only the judiciary or any other organisation is not sufficient to ensure legal aid to the underprivileged people, but a comprehensive effort is essential in this regard.
Besides, he emphasised the need for reaching the legal aid activities to the grassroots alongside expediting the services towards the poor and distressed victims for protecting their fundamental human rights.
Earlier, the committee members brought out a rally from the court premises and paraded the main streets and ended at the same place.
Various other government and non-government organizations concerned including district and police administration, Brac, ACD, Sachetan and BLAST joined the rally and discussion.
