Speakers at a post-rally discussion mentioned that concerted efforts of junior and senior citizens can build an improved society.
They mentioned that family and social harmony is very important for ensuring wellbeing of the elderly people as many people become vulnerable when they are in their old ages and face multifarious problems due to various reasons.
Apart from this, the elderly people are subjected to repression and oppression in many cases especially during natural calamities. To get a remedy in this regard, the society should take the responsibility of protecting them as there is no way to discard their contribution to the field of cultural, economical and political aspects of the country.
Probin Hitoishi Sangha (PHS), Rajshahi unit and Department of Social Services (DSS) jointly organized the discussion in conference hall of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) recently marking the International Elderly Day-2016. “Take a stand Against Ageism” was the main theme of the day. Mayor-in-charge of RCC Nizam-Ul-Azim and Deputy Director of DSS Rubina Yeasmin addressed the discussion as chief and special guests respectively with Prof Dr Jahurul Islam, president of PHS, in the chair. Mayor Azim expressed his gratitude to the government for enacting “National Elderly Policy-2013 and underscored the need for its enforcement so that the target group can derive maximum benefits out of it.
On the contrary, he said if every son and daughter pays due respect to their parents no aged people would face an unexpected condition.
He said the number of elderly people is increasing in the society because tremendous improvement of medical science helped increase life expectancy. Time has come to declare them as senior citizens or golden citizens for acknowledging their nation-building contribution.
All conscious people especially the policymakers should obviously feel the importance, he added.
Azim recalled the contribution of the elderly people to the society and country with respect and said elderly people are the society’s respectable persons and they work for building families, society and country during the golden days of their life. But affection to the elderly people is now declining and they are now losing their authority and dignity in their own families, he said, adding that many elderly people are facing social insecurity because of financial hardship and deprivation of treatment facilities.
