Comprehensive efforts for reducing disaster risks emphasised

Speakers at an emergency meeting have stressed for comprehensive efforts of all stakeholders for early preparedness and better management to reduce risks and damages during and after natural disasters to the minimum.
Upazila Disaster Management Committee (UDMC) organised the emergency meeting at the office of Pirgachha Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) in Pirgachha upazila on Monday afternoon with UNO Aliya Ferdous Jahan in the chair.
Members of the UDMC and union level disaster management committees, upazila level government and non-government officials, public representatives, socio-cultural activists, civil society members, professionals and elite attended the meeting.
Pirgachha upazila Chairman Alhaj Afsar Ali, upazila Vice-chairmen Shah Farhad Hossain and Manjuri Begum, Upazila Agriculture Officer Zahidul Haque Chowdhury, Upazila Engineer Nurul Islam and Project Implementation Officer Golam Kibria addressed. Chairmen Abdul Kader Mandal Shuja of Kandi union, Shafikul Islam Lebu of Koikuri union, Abul Kalam Azad of Parul union, Joshidul Haque of Etakumari union, Rawshan Zamil Sarder of Tambulpur union and Alhaj Mostafizur Rahman Reza of Pirgachha Sadar union also addressed.
Taking part in the discussion, the union parishad chairmen narrated the huge damages caused to standing crops, infrastructures like bridges, culverts and roads by the recent heavy rainfalls and current floods in the upazila.
They asked for conducting post-flood rehabilitation activities for the affected farmers, renovation and reconstructions of the damaged infrastructures in the upazila.
The speakers narrated various types of natural disasters, including floods and heavy rainfalls, elaborated statistics, way-outs and means for reducing disaster risks in the disaster-prone rural areas.
They put special emphasis on coordinated efforts of all government and non-government organisations and public representatives for creating public awareness and disseminating knowledge among common people to reduce risks of natural disasters.
The UNO asked for ensuring efficient emergency response management systems through adopting precautionary measures, effective dissemination of information among the common people to minimise damages during natural disasters.
She suggested for preparing lists of damages caused by the floods and heavy rains, adopting need-based local mechanisms and coordinated efforts of all for conducting post-flood rehabilitation activities in all affected sectors in the upazila. Experts for boosting fish production to attain self-reliance : Proper utilisation of the existing water bodies using the latest technologies could boost fish production in attaining self-reliance on fish output and meeting nutritional demand, fisheries experts said.
They were addressing a ceremony organised by Taraganj Upazila Fisheries Department on the upazila parishad premises here on Tuesday afternoon for releasing carp variety fish fries into the upazila parishad pond in the upazila town. With Taraganj Upazila Fisheries Officer Deepa Rani in the chair, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Golam Habib attended the ceremony as the chief guest and released fish fries in the pond water.
The fish fries were released under a comprehensive programme of releasing fingerling by Upazila Fisheries Department to the water bodies, including flood plains, submerged rice fields, ponds and ‘beels’ in the upazila for boosting fish production.
Senior Assistant Director of the District Fisheries Office Shamsul Alam, Assistant Upazila Fisheries Officer Habibur Rahman Chowdhury and President of Taraganj Press Club Khabir Uddin Pramanik were present as the special guests.
In their speeches, the speakers said the government has been distributing free fish fries among fishermen and farmers through different departments and organisations to enhance fish production for improving rural livelihoods through cutting poverty.
They put special emphasis on bringing all water bodies, ponds, tinny water bodies, flood plains, ‘beels’, ‘haors’ and flood plains under fish cultivation using the latest technologies ensuring best use of all existing natural resources. The chief guest said the present government has taken massive programmes in boosting fish production through ensuring proper utilisation of the water bodies for attaining self-reliance on fish and further accelerating the pace of development.
He also suggested all concerned for enhancing fish production along with protecting natural breeding grounds, stopping catch of smaller fishes to preserve extinct and indigenous fish species to achieve self-reliance by the rural people.
