Comprehensive efforts for publicity on RTI Act stressed

Comprehensive efforts of government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) could enhance publicity on the Right to Information (RTI) Act-2009 to ensure the peoples’ right to know information.
Information Commissioner Professor Dr Khurshida Begum Sayeed made the observation at a public orientation meeting organised by Information Commission with assistance of the Sadar upazila administration here on Saturday.
With Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ziaur Rahman in the chair, officials of different government and non-governmental organisations, public representatives, politicians, civil society members and professionals participated in the meeting.
Addressing the occasion as the chief guest, Prof. Khurshida elaborately discussed the RTI Act- 2009 and highlighted the commitment and different steps taken by the government for its proper implementation at all levels.
Taking part in the open discussion, the participants called upon officials concerned of the government and non- government organisations to work with a complete commitment in disseminating necessary information to the people as dictated by the law.
The participating officials and public representatives expressed their firm commitments to implement the RTI Act- 2009 through disseminating necessary information to the common people as per their demand in a hassle free manner.
Terming the RTI Act-2009 as a major tool for building a knowledge-based society, the chief guest stressed peoples’ motivation and urged the officials concerned to discharge responsibilities with utmost sincerity for a proper implementation of the Act.
She said that the RTI Act- 2009 had factually enhanced official power of the public servants to provide information to the common people for reaching government services to the people and establishing accountability at all levels.
Meeting on second phase war crimes trial held
A views-sharing meeting on the second phase war crimes trial was held in the conference room of the deputy commissioner (DC) in the city recently.
Additional director (Rangpur Division) of the investigation team for International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Mohammad Nazmul Haque presided over the meeting moderated by Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Dr ATM Mahbubul Karim.
Government officials, district and upazila level commanders of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad (BMS), valiant freedom fighters, leaders of Awami League (AL), and representatives of different pro-liberation organisations attended the meeting.
Deputy Commissioner Rahat Anwar, president of district AL Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, district Muktijoddha Commander Mosaddek Hossain Bablu, trustee of Hindu Religious Welfare Trust Advocate Rothish Chandra Bhowmick, president of district unit of Ghatok-Dalal Nirmul Committee Dr Mofizul Islam Mantu, addressed, among others.
