There is no alternative to creating social awareness and comprehensive efforts by all concerned for ensuring pollution-free rivers, which are lifelines for ecology, economy, biodiversity and heritage of the nation.
The opinion came this afternoon at a post-walkathon discussion organised by Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) unit of Riverine People on the Ghaghot riverbank on the outskirts of the city in observance of the World Rivers Day.
Students and teachers of the university and leaders of Riverine People participated in the eight-kilometre-long walkathon from the BRUR campus to the Ghaghot riverbank at Nisbetganj area on the fringes of the city.
After reaching the riverbank, the students, teachers and leaders of Riverine People showered flowers on the river water wishing well-being and safety of all global rivers and seeking divine blessings for their continuous existence.
Later, they took part in the discussion arranged on the riverbank with Associate Professor of the Department of Bengali of BRUR and Senator of Riverine People Dr Tuhin Wadud in the chair.
Assistant Professor Tanzibul Islam Jiban of the Department of Political Science of BRUR, students of the university and organisers of Riverine People Kaiser Alam, Abdur Rob, Manjur Arif, Rukhsana Akhter and Sweety Sarker addressed the discussion.
The speakers called upon the government and common people for becoming more conscientious in freeing the rivers from pollution as those are the lifeline for ecology, economy, environment and heritage of the country and its people.
They suggested the government for ratifying the UN Watercourses Convention as it has already been turned into the International Water Law to establish just rights on the rivers since Vietnam ratified it as the 35th country on August 17 in 2014.
They put emphasis on engaging comprehensive efforts by all concerned in ensuring pollution-free rivers with better river management to keep those alive for improving environment, ecology, biodiversity and existence of the civilization.
Dr Wadud urged the government for ratifying the UN Watercourses Convention that enables the nations in seeking justice through the United Nations to establish just rights on waters of the common international rivers.
At the end, student and organiser of Riverine People Sadiya Kabir conducted an oath-taking ceremony when the participants vowed for keeping the rivers pollution free and save those from extinction due to climate change and other man-made hazards.
