Campus Report :
With all that we throw away every day, it is time to start re-using. Greening ULAB is a leading, comprehensive campus sustainability programme led by the Centre for Sustainable Development (CSD) at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB). Two innovative events were organized at ULAB to promote waste recycling with a creative twist.
A workshop ‘Using PVC banners to make bags’ was organized recently by Greening ULAB-CSD in collaboration with the Sustainable Development Club to support young students make use of banners to create useful products. The idea of making bags out of found objects is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. Why use new materials, when there are perfectly good, unique, and interesting materials being thrown out everyday?
Rokeya Tabassum Maton was the trainer for the workshop who trained over 30 students the process of bag making with easily available waste materials such as banners. These banners are widely used in the campus for various events and discarded soon after. The products made from these banners include Tote bags, pencil boxes, make-up bags, ipad sleeves and pouches of all sizes.
An Environmental Art Workshop was organized by Greening ULAB-CSD during the weekend, 29th-30th July 2016, in collaboration with the Art Club at ULAB. Tejosh Halder Josh, a faculty member of the Fine Arts Department, Dhaka University was the trainer for the workshop. This was a new initiative combining creativity with environmental conservation. Various waste materials from ULAB and surroundings of the University such as, plastic bottles, pens, paper, banner, pieces of wood, wires, etc. were collected by participants who made different art installations and models, showcasing their creativity. This ‘Ecological Art’ serves an artistic practice proposing paradigms sustainable with the life forms and resources of our surroundings.
These wonderful creations will be put on display on 10th August 2016 at ULAB as we celebrate the re-launching of Greening ULAB.
