The Election Commission does not pay heed to the complaints including violence lodged by the BNP against the ruling party committed during the the city corporation polls. It is useless to do it agains says BNP Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
The BNP leader said this at a press conference at the BNP’s central office in Dhaka’s Naya Paltan on Monday.
He said, upcoming three city corporation polls campaigners are reportedly being threatened by the law enforce and ruling party cadres.
“There have been arrests, threats of arrests and intimidation, both openly and covertly. And the police did not stand by us. Instead, as in Khulna and
Gazipur, they weighed their full support behind the Awami League candidate.”
Rizvi said the complaints had been lodged with the Election Commission, but they ignored. “Complaining to them [the EC] is like crying in the forest.”
The BNP has alleged of extensive frauds in the elections and claimed that the ruling party would use the same methods to win in the national elections.
“The Awami League’s leaders are breaking the rules of conduct. The Deputy Commissioners are favouring the Awami League. The BNP offices were vandalised or shuttered. Activists have been threatened and intimidated. The Awami cadres created an anxious environment.”
“Various open and subtle threats are being given in Barishal and Sylhet. Even though Abul Hasnat Abdullah has received the minister status, he is still in the Barishal constituency campaigning for his son (Sadeq Abdullah). It is against the rules.”
None of the three cities has a ‘fair election environment’, the BNP leader said.
“People are uncertain if they will be able to vote safely.”
Rizvi dismissed the Awami League’s claims that the Khulna and Gazipur elections had been fair.
