BSS, Rajshahi :
Speakers said at a fair-cum-discussion that the women representatives in the local government institutions should acquire competence and leadership for their active participation to the peoples welfare activities.
They also mentioned that the women representatives should attain political empowerment through their regular activities so that they can enable to move to the national politics in phases and that is very important for institutionalization of democracy.
Prip Trust and Women Development Forum jointly organized the democracy fair and discussion styled “Democracy, Development and Political Empowerment: Role of Women Representatives in reserved Seats of Local Government Institutions” at conference hall of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the city yesterday.
‘Aparajita: Political Empowerment of Women’ supported the event in association with Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. Main thrust of the programme was to build confidence, knowledge and capacity of elected women representatives and encourage network of mutual support so that they can fulfill their obligations to their voters.
Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Mezbah Uddin Chowdhury addressed the programme as chief guest while Akbarul Hassan Millat, Editor of Daily Sonar Desh, spoke as focal person with Dipak Ranjan Adhikary, Deputy Director of Local Government Division, in the chair.
Assistant Professor of Rajshahi University School and College Rozety Naznin addressed the discussion as special guest and Prip Trust Regional Manager Saiduzzaman Sipon welcomed the participants. Hosney Ara, Councilor of Kakonhat Pourasava, was the concept-paper presenter.
The discussants viewed that many of the social problems like early marriage, polygamy, drug-addiction, dowry, gender discrimination and violence against women could have been reduced to a greater extent if their participation were ensured properly.
The UP is the nearest and closest institution of the grassroots communities especially the poor and extreme-poor people and they took shelter in it when they face any problem relating to their normal life.
So, there is no alternative to empower and strengthen the local body and its elected public representatives especially the women in reserved seats. Emphasis should be given on building confidence, knowledge and capacity of them.
Hosne Ara says ensuring equal rights to the women members in reserved seats in Union Parishad and other local government institutions is very important for their empowerment and congenial working atmosphere.
