Delay in construction work of metro-rail creates acute sufferings for commuters of Motijheel to Uttara route in the capital.
Commuters are facing untold sufferings everyday from morning to late night due to traffic gridlock on the route.
A large portion of the street has shrunken due to the construction work ensuing massive gridlock everyday.
Thousands of vehicles, including passenger buses, taxis and private cars, got stuck in such gridlock for hours everyday, worsening woes of the commuters.
Many alleged that the workers of the project are delaying construction work as per their whims, which is responsible for the acute gridlock on the route.
“I have seen the workers to dug soils and to keep that in same condition for long without any further development. If they do it speedily, the authority of the project must be able to close the boundary walls from different points to make the street wide for vehicle movement,” said, Samrat Hossain, a private service holder of Motijheel residing in Mirpur.
Similarly construction work from Shahbagh to Banglamotor areas are also delayed by the workers, said several bus passengers from the route.
The government planned to build six metro rails in the capital to reduce traffic gridlock from the capital under Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL).
Of them, the 20.1-kilometer Railway of the Uttara to Motijheel via Pallabi route started in June 2016, which was passed in 2012.
The project cost of the metro-rail will be Tk 23,490 crore after increasing several times.
It will carry 80, 000 passengers per hour.
The construction work will end within this year. As such, Engines and Coach will be brought by June-July.
Commuters may ride the metro-rail by the November-December of this year, officials said.
About 40 percent construction work of the route was completed by last December. Besides, about 69 percent of the work has been completed till Agargaon from Uttara. The pillars, viaducts and other construction work from Uttara to Agargaon have been completed. Nine stations, are now under construction in the area.
But the traffic congestion on the Rokeya Sarani areas has taken a serious turn.
Commuters of Mirpur area alleged that the officials and workers of the metro-rail are controlling the road as per their whims. They said, as the construction work above the road has almost been completed, the authority could free a large portion of their reserve areas for transport movement.
But they dominate most part of the road, which make the bus movement vulnerable.
The late-night passengers face untold sufferings every night for these. “Metro rail workers used to close one side of road in the Green University point of the Rokeya Sarani every night around 11:00. The buses from both sides use to take the one side to run for 10 to 20 minutes by rotations,” said Kamal Hossain, a media worker who go to Mirpur from Paltan intersection regularly.
As a result, the traffic gridlock from Agargaon to the Green University every night stay for long time and creates untold sufferings, he added.
The same scenario strikes Motijheel to Shahbagh areas also. Kamal along with other commuters said we are waiting for the metro-rail to reduce everyday’s gridlock. But nowadays they are suffering from huge gridlock as they think for the inconsiderable steps of the project’s construction officials.
When contacted, Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid, Secretary of the Company, told The New Nation, “Yes, I heard such allegations from different corners. I will put it to the Managing Director of the project soon.”
He said that the MD might take measures to reduce public sufferings.
When contacted M A N Siddique, the Managing Director of Metro Rail told The New Nation, “The construction work of the metro-rail is obviously maintaining international standard. So, it is not possible to work a hurry or shortcut way.” He showed examples of accidents during different construction work of flyovers in Dhaka and Chattogram, which took place due to shortcut work.
The MD however said that he will direct to the officials so that the road blocking of Green University points to start above 12:am to reduce gridlock.
He said that the suffering would be eliminated soon. People of Dhaka have showed patience for long. We urged them for more some days. They will get good results from the project by this year.
