The commuter train in Benapole-Jashore-Khulna route has allegedly become a safe route for smugglers. It is alleged that smugglers are directly being assisted by the train authorities. Benapole Railway Police have long been accused of taking bribes from smugglers.
However, the train authorities refused to accept bribe from smugglers. Indian heroin, Phensidyl, yaba, cosmetics, imitation jewelery, spice products, fireworks, bomb-making equipment are being smuggling safely to different parts of the country.
The main destinations of smuggling routs are Daulatpur, Gatipara, Teroghar, Sadipur,S utipur, Putkhali, Goga, Bhulot, Kaiba, Rudrapur, Dhannokhola, Ghiba, Kashipur and Shalkona.
The BGB are trying to prevent smuggling at the border area till now. Commuter train used to travel from Benapole to Khulna twice a day.
However, due to the demands of the passengers. The same train started from Benapole to Khulna at 5pm. Later, the train started to open from Benapole to khulna at 9.15 am to facilitate the passengers. However, the train has not brought any benefit to the passengers so far.
On the other hand, smugglers widely used as trafficking vehicles. The general passengers of the train is being harassed by smugglers in different ways. The smuggling goods put in the bathroom, body fittings of the train and the seat cover.
Even smugglers hide their goods in the train’s ceiling. However, the GRP police on the train pretended not to see it. Passengers on this route prefer the train fare much less than the bus to go Jashore-Khulna, and the pleasure is more.
But once an ordinary passenger gets on the train, he doesn’t want to get on the train again fearing harassment by smugglers. Most of the seats in the train are occupied by smugglers and smuggled goods.
However, ordinary passengers has no seat in the train because of the smugglers . Otherwise, from Benapole to Khulna, they have to stand up and reach their destination. Luckily when they inform to check the train by BGB, suddenly they leave the train quickly and throwing their goods through the window.
If any passenger protests, he or she will be harassed by the smugglers . However, the smugglers travel from Benapole to Khulna by paying fair of Tk.150 to TT. The smugglers are using the train as their safe route to avoid checking by law enforcer. They can stop the train at various places on the way any time.
It is risky for the smugglers to cross the Benapole-Jashore Highway. BGB check post in Amra kahli , Highway check post in Navaron and police check post in Jhikorgacha . So that they used the train avoid the checking law enforcement agencies.
Once these goods are taken to the train, there is no barrier from Benapole to Jessore, Khulna and there is no BGB or police anywhere.
Habibur Rahman , a train passenger said that , Most of the smugglers are using this commuter train in Benapole as their safe vehicle for smuggling. The railway police and the joint authorities in charge of the train are giving priority to the smugglers after receiving a fixed rate of money. And the smugglers from the police station are paying Tk. 500 per luggage.
Whenever a smuggler refuses to pay the money to them, The GRP detain their smuggled goods. What passengers hear when they try to hide their faces with clothes. This is how commuter trains pass from Benapole to Khulna.
Passengers on the train said the smugglers could not pick up too much baggage because of the BGB patrol in the Benapole Railway Station. So the smugglers lined up along the railway at a distance of 5 km of Kagojpukur area from Benapole rail station .
As the driver of the train involved with the smugglers, after the train left the station, smugglers pull the train chain and stop the train. In the meantime, smugglers threw their luggage cargo through the door and window of the train. And the other smugglers take specific seat to pull for the smugglers . Among the places of the train stops are Dighirpar, Kagajpukur, Vaberber West Para, and on the Navaran Bridge. However, at present, the train from Benapole to Navaran stop several place for them. After leaving the train from Navaran station, the train was stopped at a distance of one kilometer.
During this time, the smugglers picked up the smuggled goods at a rapid place.
The train driver from Benapole Commuter train said, “We do not stop at the train on the way for the smugglers. wherever if we don’t stop the train, the smugglers open hosepipe of the train and release the air.
Md. Saiduzaman, station master, Benapole rail way said that , there is no relation with the smugglers to our staff. If any one involved this activities he will be punished.
