Community support must to establish crime-free society

All-out support from the community is very important to free the society from all sorts of crimes including militancy, terrorism and drug-addiction, said Shafiqul Islam.
“We are committed to make the society free from the crimes. But, police alone cannot do the job without community support,” added Shafiqul Islam, Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP).
He was addressing an anti-militancy and anti-drug addiction meeting at Shaheb Bazar Zero Point in the metropolis on Sunday evening as chief guest. RMP and Boalia unit of Community Policing Forum jointly organized the meeting with the main thrust of encouraging and motivating the people towards freeing the society from various crimes.
With RMP Deputy Police Commissioner (West) Nahidul Islam in the chair, Councilor of Rajshahi City Corporation Abdul Hamid Sarker Tekan, city unit general secretary of Awami League Dablu Sarker and Officer-in-Charge of Boalia Model Police Station Shahadat Hossain also spoke.
RMP Commissioner Shafiqul Islam said the community people should extend cooperation towards police with specific information about the criminals. The community people know well about location of the criminals, drug traffickers and traders and the police need the information from the citizens for taking legal action against them.
He added that police-citizens joint patrolling and drives against the social crimes are the main objective of the community based policing and there is no alternative to activating it to free the society from the crimes.
The community based policing had been introduced in the metropolis with a noble view, but the community people should take the responsibility of making it effective.
“If you give us authentic information about the criminals and other anti-social elements, we will put in our level best efforts to bring those to book as early as possible,” he reminded the community people.
Ensuring fundamental rights of farmers stressed
Legitimate rights of the farmers and others concerned should be protected rightly for the sake of encouraging them towards boosting agricultural productions to meet up its gradually demands, speakers at a discussion here said.
They referred to their enormous contribution to the country’s agricultural development , the speakers unanimously said the farmers deserve the rights of getting all requisite privileges. There is no alternative to protect their interests as a whole.
They were addressing the inaugural session of a daylong farmers gathering held at Public Library premises in the metropolis on Sunday. On the occasion, 21 farmers were awarded as recognition of their laudable contribution to the farming field.
Bangladesh Resource Centre for Indigenous Knowledge (BARCIK), a rights-based development organization, organized the programme in observance of the World Food Day-2016. More than 300 farmers from various areas in vast Barind tract attended the meeting.
Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi division Sultan Abdul Hamid addressed the discussion as chief guest saying the present government is very much positive towards protecting the legitimate rights of the farmers.
Lauding their contribution to the farm production he urged the attending farmers to avail the incentives and other opportunities being provided by the government. With farmers’ organizer valiant freedom fighter Shamsuddin Mondal in the chair, Farmers Rahima Khatun and Abdul Mukid Dulal also spoke.
During his keynote presentation, Shahidul Islam, Barind Region Coordinator of BARCIK, puts forward a demand of initiating pension scheme for the old aged farmers for their food security.
