Proper planning with innovation of community-based mechanisms, ways and strategies could be more effective in adapting to adverse impacts of climate change in vulnerable riverine char areas.
The opinion came yesterday at concluding ceremony of a two-day training course on ‘Preparation of community based planning for adaptation to climate change’ held at Training Centre of RDRS Bangladesh, an NGO in Kurigram district town.
Twenty female leaders of four Community Climate Change Adaptation Groups (CCAGs) from remote Notarkandi and Mudafat char villages under Astomirchar union in Chilmari upazila of Kurigram participated in the training course, a press release said.
The NGO organised the training under ‘Strengthening Resilience of Internally Displaced People due to Impact of Climate Change in Northwest Bangladesh (SRIDP)’ project being funded by Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC).
The main objectives of the training were to increase knowledge and capacity of the internally displaced char community people to adapt to adverse situations, different climatic and weather conditions and natural disasters in char areas.
Assistant Coordinator (environment and disaster) of RDRS Bangladesh for Kurigram Agriculturist Shafiul Islam and its Medical officer Dr Shaheen Sazzad Hossain conducted the training course as resource persons.
Chilmari Upazila Manager of the SRIDP project of RDRS Bangladesh Iqbal Faruque facilitated the two-day training course and also presided over the concluding ceremony.
In the training course, the resource persons discussed about climate, weather, climate change, adoption of participatory rural appraisals for planning local mechanisms for adaptation to climate change, health and hygiene issues during disasters.
