The government has formed two committees to find ways to remove unfit vehicles and make traffic signals effective.
The committees were formed at a meeting of the Bangladesh Road Transport Advisory Council at the Secretariat on Sunday, said Communications Minister Obaidul Quader.
The first one would file its report within 10 days. Its recommendations would be executed after Mar 26.
The chairman of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) was made convener of the committee to remove unfit vehicles.
Other members are secretary general of Road Transport Owners’ Association, joint commissioner of traffic, deputy inspector general of highway,
engineer of the Roads and Highways Department (RHD), general secretary of Road Transport Workers’ Federation and president of Truck and Covered Van Association.
The secretary at the Local Government Division has been made the convener of the second committee.
Executive officers of north and south city corporations of Dhaka, additional traffic commissioner, a representative of Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA), joint secretary at RHD, president of Road Transport Association and a BRTA representative.
The minister identified lack of coordination as the main problem in the transport sector.
Quader said, the rate of extortion by occupying bus terminals had come down significantly. “But we can’t say that it has stopped totally.”
He admitted that several projects taken up during the final days of the last government remained unfulfilled.
The minister said Dhaka is the dirtiest city in the world. “We want to remove that stain.”
The minister said 500 environmental friendly petrol-run taxicabs would be brought from Japan. The army would import 250 taxis while a private organisation would bring the rest.
They would operate in Dhaka and Chittagong, Quader said. In the first phase, the army and the private firm would import 30 each.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would launch the new cabs on the first day of Bengali New Year, the minister said. State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and State Minister for LGRD Mashiur Rahman Ranga were also present at the meeting.
