Commercial export of Sundarban honey begins

Commercial export of Sundarbans honey began in February this year (2013-14 fiscal) to the satisfaction of honey gatherers (Moual) and exporters in the area.
The export destination was India, according to Export Promotion Bureau(EPB).
The earning from honey export during February-June period in 2013-14 was Tk 18.5 lakhs against the target of Tk 50 lakh.
Terming the decision to export honey a prudent one and earning very promising, divisional forest officer of West Zone Sunderban, Zahir Uddin Ahmed told BSS, that export might be increased if Mouals place their collection for export. They are yet to know that export of honey has already begun.
“We will take initiative to export Sunderbans honey under a brand”,he said.
A total of 2100 Mouals collect honey from Sunderbans every year, he said.
In 2013-2014 fiscal, around 1,554 quintals of honey were collected from Sunderban West Zone and around 550 quintals from East Zone, he added.
“We will export honey to other countries after fulfilling local demand,” he said.
A honey trader, Mostafizur Rahman, of city’s Iqbalnagar area told BSS, it is a hard business to create overseas market for honey, but we will do this in India with cooperation of the government.
