Law Minister Anisul Huq on Saturday said commercial disputes should be kept out of the purview of courts wherever possible.
He made the remark while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled ‘The Rise of International Arbitration in Asia’ held in the city. BIAC and Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP jointly organized the seminar.
The Law Minister thanked the Bangladesh International Arbitration Centre (BIAC) for providing alternative option to court system for businesses.
He narrated the initiatives undertaken by the government in promoting
out-of-court settlement of disputes through the use of ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) method. The Law Minister appreciated Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP for its efforts to reach out to Bangladesh in promoting arbitration.
BIAC Chairman Mahbubur Rahman moderated the event and thanked all who supported BIAC.
He said, BIAC was created as a result of the felt needs of businesses in creating an enabling environment in the country.
The keynote speakers from Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP were Francis Xavier, SC and V Bala, while Sameer Sattar provided a Bangladesh perspective.
Welcoming the guests, BIAC Chief Executive Dr Toufiq Ali said Asia is becoming the hub for global economic activity.
He welcomed the initiative of Rajah and Tann to emphasise a vital topic and for encouraging us to look at dispute resolution methods outside court system and prepare for the future.
