Commercial cultivation of creeper arum (Loti Kochu) is increasing in Panchagarh district.
It is extensively cultivated mainly in the Debiganj upazila of the district.
However, now it is being cultivated in Debiduba and Sonaher union parishads of Debiganj upazila in Panchagarh district.
Debiganj Agriculture Office sources said cultivation of these vegetables is very profitable as it grows in uncultivable low land as well as in the homesteads of poor farmers. The farmers use tissue culture technology and also plant saplings.
In a 30-decimal of land 2,600 to 3,000 saplings are planted and become harvestable within three month.
Abdul Jabber, a farmer of Sonaher union said generally 30-decimal of land yield 10 maunds of Loti Kochu in a month and it is again harvestable in less then a month and it remains harvestable for six month.
Jabber said by cultivating Loti Kochu on three bighas of land he has already earned Taka 25 thousand.
Debiganj Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Abdulla Al-Mamun said this high protein vegetable is being exported to Middle East and European countries and also being transported to Dhaka and Khulna.
