Commerce Secretary M Mofizul Islam on Wednesday underscored the need for accelerating trade at both local and international levels to develop the economy of the country.
“We must have adequate products in this era of market economy. If we have products, we can sell those and earn money,” he said, speaking as the chief guest at the closing and certificate distribution ceremony of a three-day training programme on “Trade and WTO: A Special Course for Journalists for Print Media” at Dhaka University in the city.
Center for Micro Finance and Development of the Dhaka University and Strengthening Institutional Capacity and Human Resources Development for Trade Promotion Project of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Cell under Commerce Ministry jointly organised the programme.
A total of 25 journalists from different print media joined the training programme to gather knowledge about WTO. Mofizul Islam urged journalists to work as the development partners of the Commerce Ministry for expediting the country’s trade and commerce.
“The reports of journalists are helping us in many fields. We will have to work together to keep Bangladesh livable for the new generation,” he added.
Asking the business community to be competitive, Mofizul said lack of capacity for negotiation and quality product is the key barrier for the country. “We will have to assess these as the present market is volatile,” he added. He said media can play a vital role to mitigate the barriers and develop the country’s economy.
Director General of the WTO cell under the Commerce Ministry M Munir Chowdhury chaired the closing session while Director of the WTO Cell M Hafizur Rahman and Dhaka University Finance Department Professor Dr M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, among others, were present at the function.
