UNB, Dhaka :
Prime Minister’s Energy Advisor Dr. Taswfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury has urged the local and the foreign entrepreneurs to come up with innovative ideas and new technologies to invest in the country’s power sector.
“Bangladesh needs huge investment in power generation and transmission. We want private sector to come up with
innovative solution,” he said while inaugurating “Bangladesh Power Summit 2017” at a hotel in the city on Tuesday. Chairman of Parliamentary standing committee on Power and Energy Ministry Tajul Islam MP also spoke at the 2-day conference organised by Chinese event management firm Wispool Group.
Tawfiq Elahi said, investors should not focus only on power generation, but they should invest in power transmission sector as there is huge potential for business in the sector.
Pointing to Bangladesh’s success in renewable energy, the Energy Advisor said the country has implemented the world’s largest solar home system. He said, now Bangladesh has undertaken a solar irrigation project to introduce solar-power based water irrigation system.
“But the project has been facing challenge as it needs a suitable financial model to run it commercially. So, investors can come up with solutions to invest in solar irrigation project to run it commercially”, he said.
He also emphasised promotion of research and development (RND) so that new challenges could be easily overcome in power and energy sector. “Public and private partnership could take place in this regard,” he added.
After the inauguration, while talking to reporters he said the government has been working to resolve the gas crisis by importing LNG. Suggesting the country’s investors to be patient and wait until 2018 to get the imported gas, he said a number of floating LNG terminals are being built in Moheshkhali to facilitate the import of gas.
He said, some land-based LNG terminals will also be set up in the country.
