Come out of billboards to face the real world of people’s desperation

The government is now on street high billboards of all shapes and sizes to be found omnipresent. Some are huge and much larger than lives and more colourful than others. The messages of the government’s huge success must be shown everywhere in the capital city Dhaka and outside forgetting that the politics is much more serious business than show business.
The billboard business is booming along with the broad smiles of self-satisfaction of the ministers carrying the bright messages of success not to be seen down in the country. This goes as a clever idea of enlightened bureaucrats who have taken the full charge of the government inasmuch as the people have no vote and voice. The government has no popular mandate and the government has also no commitment to the people.
It must be recognised that a kind of awareness on the part of the government about the need to convince the people of their achievements though not visible in bare eyes and have no reflection in public life.
We do not have political leadership to understand that the true success stories of a government come from the people and not through bureaucratic ways of suppressing the truth under show of colourful publicity by big billboards.
On whom the government depends for its survival has led along the path of lies and corruption to a situation of breakdown of the government itself. Most of government functionaries behave unaccountably. The whole system is now protected by the fear of police power.
The government is being run, not by the ministries, but by mobile courts and police power.
Respecting law by the people has been made impossible as abuse of law is easy. Under the new Transport Act refusing bail will abuse the harsh law too easily. Arresting is enough for punishment. The truth of violation of the law is meaningless till trial takes place years later.
The government refuses to understand that most of the chaos in the administration is caused by abuse of law within the administration and outside. So law itself cannot be good or bad if its right application is not ensured. The laws are passed to make the police more powerful and the people more powerless.
The government should come down from the comfortable height of the billboards and try to acknowledge the reality of a non-functional government.
It is a sign of hopelessness if the government feels reassured by living in a world full of easy money and free foreign visits with no concern as how to save the country from the chaos and mismanagement of their own creation. Life has become harsh and unsafe and there is no remedy and no hope for the victims. Rich lifestyle is ensured for those in power and their henchmen.
The government has been successful in corrupting the whole administration and destroying the concept of politics as selfless service to the people. One more thing the present government has established that our relationship with India is one-way traffic. Friendship is a two-sided “love” affair. But friendship cannot be taken as a threat for internal politics. In the onion diplomacy it was a failure for India to show reciprocity.
Our advice is that the people feel helpless under injustices and wrongs they are forced to bear. But the people are in desperation. We should search for a peaceful way of change, because change is inevitable.
