The incident took place in Rajabari Christian Para about 8:30pm following a quarrel over a trifling matter, police and family members said. Victim Md Sohag, 20, is a HSC second year student of Uttara Public College and younger of the five siblings, who died in a hospital.
Sohag’s brother Sagor said that his brother was standing in an alley when mud splashed from a rickshaw wheels hit some seven to eight youths, who were gossiping nearby.
The youths aged between 20 to 25 years soon started beating the rickshaw-puller prompting Sohag to protest.
It enraged the youths, who attacked him and stabbed him at one stage.
Locals rescued him and rushed to Uttara Northern Hospital, where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Sagor said that his brother had no animosity with the group and could identify only one Hridoy, a local boy, among the attackers. Sagor filed a case against Hridoy and 7-8 unidentified youths.
Police said that they were yet to confirm whether it was an incident of gang rivalry.
