A college student has committed suicide after secretly marrying her alleged uncle in Bhangura, Pabna. The girl’s name is Sumi Akhter (20). The incident took place at Maidandighi Bazar in Khanmarich Union of the upazila.Sumi, who committed suicide, is the daughter of Abul Kashem of Moydandighi village and a 12th class student of Bhangura BM College. Police on Saturday sent the body to the Pabna district morgue for an autopsy. Meanwhile, alleged uncle Fazal Hossain (50) has been absconding since the incident.
Locals said Fazal Hossain, a resident of East Ramnagar village of the union, used to call Sumi’s father as his brother.
Fazal has dishline business in Moydanighi Bazar. Sumi comes to pay the disline bill every month and makes a love affair between them.
They also got married secretly in 2018. But as the girl called Fazal Hossain uncle, the matter remained secret.
Realizing that Sumi was going to be a mother for some time, she went to Fazal’s shop on Friday (May 21) and publicly asked him to take her home as his wife. As Fazal did not agree to this, Sumi fell ill after taking some tablets there.
Fazal Hossain took her to the Bhangura Upazila Health Complex for treatment. The on-duty medical officer referred her to Pabna Sadar Hospital after initial treatment but she died on the way.
Muhammad Anwar Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Bhangura Police Station said police recovered Sumi’s body from the spot on Friday night.
He also said that Fazal and Sumi got married secretly in 2018. A man delivered a copy of their wedding marriage certificate to the police station.
A UD case has been filed in the police station in this regard.
