Collective efforts to prevent human trafficking stressed

Speakers at a function in Gaibandha stressed the need for collective efforts of all quarters including GO and NGO to prevent human trafficking that creates grave concern among peace-loving people of the country on Monday.
A large number of people particularly the women and the children are being trafficked and smuggled to many countries including India and Malaysia by some organized gangs of human traffickers every year.
They made the comments while addressing a workshop on Networking and Volunteer Develop organized by Sinnomul Mohila Samity (SMS) at its hall room under the project of Protecting Victims of Human Trafficking in Bangladesh funded by Relied International.
Deputy Commissioner M. Ehsan-e-Elahi addressed the function as the chief guest and assistant commissioner and in charge of expatriate section of DC office M. Sharif Ahmed was present as the special guest.
With executive director of SMS Morshedur Rahman Khan in the chair, the function was also addressed journalists Abu Zafar Sabu, Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman, Dipak Kumar Pal and Uzzal Chakrabartee and project officer Khandaker Lipon.
The trend of human trafficking is increasing day by day in various forms like the sexual exploitation, forced labour, begging, delinquency and adoption, the speakers added.
The speakers also noted that poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, ignorance, drug addiction, cross border trade, dowry, child marriage and social curses have so far been identified as the main reasons behind human trafficking.
Terming the human trafficking as a heinous crime DC Ehsan-e-Elahi underscored the need for forging a social movement to raise strong voice for freeing the society form the social crime.
In this context, the DC also emphasized on creating much awareness to the vulnerable people especially those are interested to go to abroad as workers, access to need base information and pre-departure orientation along with bringing the recruitment agencies under proper sensitization programme.
The DC also thanked the authorities concerned for introducing the project here for the trafficked victims in a bid to provide them with mini grant and other supports including legal aids to help them live in the society as general ones.
