BSS, Dhaka :
Speakers at a meeting on Friday unequivocally called for collective efforts of all government and non-government organisations concerned to protect the child rights for their proper grooming.
Protecting the children from all sorts of violation, repression and deprivation is needed for building a healthy and knowledge-based future generation, they told the meeting in Rajshahi.
UNICEF organised the meeting at Brac Learning Centre to mark the 30th anniversary of UN Child Rights Convention. Around 50 children and juveniles from different constituencies in the district joined the meeting and actively took part in its open discussion.
Reports related to suggestions and recommendations of the meeting will be placed before the next Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights.
Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton addressed the meeting as the chief guest while Deputy Inspector General of Police AKM Hafiz Akhter and Commissioner-in-Charge of Rajshahi division Dr Abdul Mannan spoke as special guests.
UNICEF’s Rajshahi and Rangpur Divisional Head Nazibullah Hameem presided over the meeting.
Liton said responsive and sensible social and political initiatives are crucial means for protecting rights of children particularly the slum-dwelling and underprivileged ones towards transforming them into worthy citizens.
He said the present government under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is very much positive towards protecting the child rights and urged the field-level government and non-government organisations concerned to supplement the government endeavour.
Physical and mental development of children couldn’t be possible until they are protected from violence and deprivation from their early childhood, the mayor added.
