Concerted efforts as well as approach of all government and non-government organisations and others concerned has become an urgent need to attain the cherished goal of large-scale expansion of digital system.
Wide-ranging expansion of modern information and communication technology is very important to make the nation happy, prosperous, educated and free from poverty and hunger.
“Digital technology is the only driving force to establish a justice-based and knowledge-based society to ensure equal distribution of scopes and resources for the people,” said Prof Dr Shahid Uz Zaman of Computer Science and Engineering Department of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology.
He said the digitisation process has already created scope of employment and income generation in various ways including outsourcing, selling products through e-shop and offering different services at the Union Information Service Centres (UISCs).
He also said that the process, in near future, would also help develop a knowledge-based society and good governance.
Prof Zaman, however, said the fruits of digitisation should be taken to both urban and rural areas to attain the cherished goal. The desired Digital Bangladesh could not be built until the rural folks are linked with the modern information technology.
“We have no way but to bringing the people under the E-governance network to make the nation free from the vicious cycle of hunger and poverty”, he added.
Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, Pro-VC of Rajshahi University, stressed the need for sincere, effective and collective efforts to build digital Bangladesh.
He observed that the field level administrative and local government representatives have a vital role to play as most of the district and upazila administrations have already launched website for providing necessary civic service related information to the public in general.
Dr Sarwar Jahan put forward a set of recommendations relating to various development issues to attain the cherished goal of digitisation process.
The issues included food and agriculture, water resources and irrigation, local government, good governance, rural development, education, ICT, communication, health, nutrition and population, transportation, power and fuel, industry and trade, urbanisation and regional development, gender and environment.
AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, former Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation, said the digital Bangladesh would help generate huge employment opportunity across the country.
Besides this domestic employment opportunity, he said the digitisation process would also equip people to explore the enormous scope of outsourcing with creating a knowledge-based society.
He said the major objectives of the digitisation process are to provide people with all necessary services at their doorsteps, ensuring accountability and transparency towards establishing a knowledge-based society and good governance.
Liton said the process started with introducing information and services centres at union levels, which is now being expanded to the highest level of administrations in phases.
He said people now know about the digital Bangladesh, but most of them are not aware of the services and benefit of the process they would be enjoying in future.
