Speakers at a roundtable discussion laid emphasis on the necessity of collective efforts by engaging all stakeholders for attaining self-sufficiency in country’s dairy sector.
The discussion titled “PRAN Dairy Hub and potential dairy sector” was organised by PRAN Dairy Limited held at PRAN Dairy Complex at Shahjadpur in Sirajganj, said a press release.
Director General of the Department of Livestock Services Dr Hiresh Ranjan Bhowmik said country’s dairy sector is moving forward despite many hurdles. The milk production was 12 lakh tonnes in 2005 which has reached to 94 lakh tonnes in 2018.
Emphasizing on reducing production cost, he said the government has taken many steps to reduce production cost so that the farmers are not affected under any circumstances.
Director General at Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute Dr Nathu Ram Sarker said, “We all have to help farmers to attain self-sufficiency in dairy sector.” He also emphasized on enhancing milk production as well reduction of production cost to benefit the farmers.
Dean of Veterinary Medicine Faculty of Sylhet Agricultural University Dr Mahbub-e-Elahi said Milk is a food enriched in mineral, protein and carbohydrate and it must be highlighted among the people. He also highlighted issue of making various flavored milk popular among the people which will help to flourish country’s dairy sector.
Bangladesh Agricultural University Teacher Nadira Sultana said, “We have to start the process of enhancing the quality of milk from farmer’s level. We need to work to enhance their awareness level also.”
She further said many research have been conducted on livestock in Bangladesh, but the research outcome is not disseminated up to farmer level. Nadira underscored the need for reaching the outcome among the farmers for the betterment of the sector. Executive Director at PRAN Dairy Md Muniruzzaman said, “We do not only think about business but also work to develop the life-standard of farmers.”
