RU Correspondent :
The teachers and students of Rajshahi University on Sunday expressed their dissatisfaction over the snail progress into the gruesome killing of Rajshahi University english Professor AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee and demanded quick justice.
They came up with the demand while addressing a rally and a human chain held at the Mukul Mancha, a makeshift platform set up after the nickname of the slain professor and in front of RU senate building at 12:00pm on Sunday.
English department and RU Teachers’ Association organised the programmes separately, marking the one year into Professor Rezaul Karim killing.
Addressing the rally, speakers said that they were not satisfied with the slow progress into the killing case.
Professor Jahurul Islam of the department said, though the authorities assured of them several times that the judicial proceedings of Rezaul Karim case would be finished soon, they saw no tangible progress in trial of the gruesome killing. “We are informed that the charge sheet into the killing has been submitted-but, on which day the trail would be started we do not know”, he added. He also demanded to finish the trail of the case quickly under speedy tribunal.
Prof Mizanur Rahman, students’ adviser of the university said that at least four teachers of the university had been killed for last ten years. But, they did not see any proper single justice into the killings.
Teachers’ Association President Prof Muhammad Shahidullah said that they were not happy with the slow progress in holding trial of the case, as the court is yet to frame charges against the accused persons even after six months from submitting the charge sheet.
“Our ultimate demand is to ensure the exemplary punishment of the perpetrators, and we will continue our demonstration until our demand is met”, he added.
Earlier, over five hundred teachers and students of RU English Department brought a protest procession on campus where students of the various department joined.
On April 23, last year, some unidentified assailants hacked to death Professor AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee, 58, near his house in Rajshahi city.
