The current cold wave in the country may continue till Tuesday.
The bone-chilling is crippling the daily life as the people is constrained to stay inside the houses across the country especially in the districts of Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions.
According to the meteorological department, the weather is likely to improve from next Wednesday. “The acute cold wave is sweeping over northern and north-western regions comprising Rajshahi, Pabna, Dinajpur and Kushtia districts. The adverse weather may continue for two more days,” said Nijhum Rokeya Ahmed, a meteorologist of Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
The moderate cold wave is blowing over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Barisal divisions and Khulna divisions and the regions of Srimangal and Sitakunda.
Met officials also said that moderate to thick fog might occur over the country from mid night to morning and it may continue at some places till noon on Monday while weather may remain dry and partly cloudy sky over the country.
Night and day temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country.
Met offices said that maximum temperature was recorded 26.2 degrees Celsius on Saturday at Teknaf in Chittagong division and Sunday’s minimum temperature was 5.1 degrees Celsius at Dinajpur in Rangpur division and Rajshahi.
Besides these, the cold wave has shattered northern districts people’s life.
The Rangpur Met Office said the temperature may further fall during the next 24 hours ending at 6 am on Sunday.
Mohammad Ali , the In-charge of Rangpur Met Office said the minimum temperature at Rangpur city was recorded 7.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday against previous day’s 10 degree Celsius.
The minimum temperature was recorded 5.1 degrees Celsius on the day against previous day’s 7.4 degrees at Dinajpur, 7.2 degrees against previous day’s 8.5 degrees at Sayedpur, 8.2 degrees against previous day’s 10.2 degrees at Dimla and 7 degrees against previous day’s 10 degrees Celsius at Rajarhat in the region.
Local residents of the regions said, the cold wave has halted their normal life. It also decreases presence in offices, factories as well as educational institutions for last days. The extreme weather has also aggravated sufferings of the people living in char areas of Brahmaputra basin.
Physicians from different hospitals said people especially children and old-aged citizens have been coming to them with cold-related diseases including cough, fever and asthma in last few days.
Dr Mozammel Hossain, Divisional Deputy Director (Health) of Rangpur division, said various measures were taken at the government-run health facilities in all eight districts and 58 upazilas here to provide necessary healthcare facilities to cold-related patients.
He also said that the medicine stock is sufficient there.
In Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions, the district administrations, NGOs, voluntary, professional, socio-cultural and charitable organisations, business bodies, banks and other institutions have extended hands by distributing warm clothes among the cold-stricken people to curb their sufferings.
Horticulture Specialist of the Department of Agriculture Extension Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam said the prevailing weather might affect normal growth of winter crop plants including potato and Boro seedbeds, if the situation further prolongs for the days to come.
