Cold wave and fog paralised normal life in northern region including Kurigram district for the last several days.
The sun has not been visible for the last four days here causing the poor people especially day labourers are being suffered badly.The river side of people of 16 rivers including the Teesta, Dharla, Brahmaputra and Dudkumer are passsing their days without warm clothes.
The cold wave was increasing at the end of November. The biting cold increase just after evening.The pooe people in both rural and urban areas are seen to warm themselves firing westage papers and wood.The domestic animals are also seen to wear torn clothes by their owners to save from biting cold.The children and old men are the worst sufferers due to cold wave.They have been suffering from cold related diseases for the last several days.Some 45 children have been admitted in the Hospital with pneumonia and dyarrhoea within the last 12 hours.About 200-300 patients are being received with cold related diseases in out door of the hospital daily,sources said.Rangpur meteorological officials said the temperatute remains 12-13 degree celcious today. Kurigram Deputy Commissioner ABM Azad said some 8420 pieces of blankets were given to UNO in upazila levels for distribution among cold hit poor people.
Barisal Correspondent adds: Heavy fog over the southern region from early Thursday to late morning disrupting road and water transportations suffered commuters and mass people by 6-8 hours delay to reach their destinations.
Delay of reaching southern bound road and water transports due to unexpected dense fog caused sufferings of hundreds of stranded passengers with health, food and sanitation problems and to reach their destination in due time, passenger sources said.
Newspapers in the city reached and distributed at afternoon.
Abul Bashar Majumdar, deputy director (traffic and passenger safety) BIWTA at Barisal Port, acknowledging the facts said the water transports plying on the river routes have no fog-lights and sonar equipments to continue their journey and safe anchoring.
Although the mercury on Sunday marked to 16 degrees Celsius lowest and 26 degree Celsius highest in Barisal and adjoining areas, but density of fogs increased narrowing visibility to 50-60 meters from 1:00 am on river routes, said Pronob Kumar Roy, official of Barisal Met office.
This kind of fog in early December was not unusual and may be caused from vast fluctuations of day and night temperatures, the Met official said.
Water transports including triple deck launches MV Kitankhola, MV Parabat, MV Sundarban, reached Barisal port from Dhaka between 6:00-11:00am Thursday delaying 2-6 hours than scheduled time, said Saidur Rahman Rintu, vice president of Barisal launch owners association.
Abdur Rashid, a passenger of MV Parabat said crews of the vessel lost visibility in dense fog on early Thursday near Chandpur and became stranded creating anxiety among the passengers of the vessel.
Gopal Chandra Majumdar, assistant general manager Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation Barisal station, said rocket steamer PS Turn on Dhaka-Morelganj route left Barisal Port after 11:45 delaying 6 hours.
The high density of fog started covering river routes from about 1:00 am early Thursday forced water transports to anchor at different points of Meghna River till 6:30am, said Abdus Salam, a crew of MV Sundarban.
Ferry services on southern down routes connecting Bhola, Patuakhali, Kuakata, Mawa and Dauladia remained suspended for 6-8 hours till Thursday late morning as heavy fog descended on the lower part of Meghna, Arial Kha Rivers and their branches, BIWTC sources said.

The sweeping moderate to mild cold wave coupled with blowing cooler winds, fogs, mists and drizzles affected public life everywhere in the sub-Himalayan northern districts yesterday, official and local sources said.
The situation deteriorated following sharp falls in the maximum temperatures today causing unbearable sufferings to the commoners amid drizzles in Rangpur, Nilphamari, Thakurgaon, Panchagarh and some other northern districts since this afternoon.
The sun remained covered behind clouds, fogs and mists amid blowing cooler winds throughout the day for the second consecutive day yesterday affecting vehicular traffic and forcing the drivers to put headlights of their vehicles on for averting accidents.
According to the officials, experts and environmentalists, a behavioural change has already taken place in climatic pattern following climate change impacts as the weather has become almost unpredictable with unknown ultimate consequences.
The situation deteriorated following further falls in the maximum temperatures despite little rise in the minimum temperatures during the past 24 hours ending at 6 pm at most places in the region yesterday.
The day and farm-labourers could not conduct their normal works to earn livelihoods as the thick layers of fogs and clouds covered the sun throughout the day amid showering mists and drizzles to worsen the situation further.
